Lambert Kahumoku

January 18, 1956 - April 30, 1993

Irony exists in the meaning of Lambert's Hawaiian name and the fact that it is a perfect name to describe the Na Kahumoku youth leadership movement. Kahu means Keeper - like a shepherd. Moku is the Hawaiian word for island.

Lambert Kahumoku was one of the last natural Hawaiian "kanaka". He spoke in heavy "pidgeon". He danced in the Merry Monarch and he ran in the Ironman triathlon. He sang. He gardened. His sometimes raucous humor made people laugh. His spirit now continues in his love of the ocean, the mountains and of traditional Hawaiian culture.

Almost 15 years later his effect on Douglass and many others of Hawaii island is still felt.

Lambert was the jewel of a large Hawaiian family and both he and his family would be proud to see their name attached to such a movement.
